[edit] Description

This course does not appear in the current edition of the Undergraduate Record, but on October 26, 2007, an email from the professor teaching the course was forwarded through the University Game Developers mailing list. Here is the description:

Viruses, worms, and other malicious software are an ever-increasing threat to computer systems. There is an escalating battle between computer security specialists and the designers of malicious software. This course provides an essential understanding of the techniques used by both sides of the computer security battle: the tricks employed by virus designers, the vulnerabilities they exploit, and the damage they cause, as well as the countermeasures used to detect viruses and prevent software vulnerabilities. Some famous viruses and worms are used as examples for study. Programming assignments will teach specific techniques of virus detection. NOTE: You will not be taught how to create viruses in this course, and ethical behavior will be demanded.
